Why Green Tech?
Green Tech touches every part of our future from energy and waste reduction to sustainable transport, smart cities, and circular economies.
We want to use this hackathon to:
• Build local capability and interest in sustainable innovation.
• Inspire younger participants through hands-on education.
• Attract attention to Ipswich as a growing Green Tech hub.
Suffolk is uniquely positioned to lead the UK’s Green Tech revolution, making it the ideal focus for our upcoming hackathon. The county boasts significant renewable energy infrastructure, including the East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm, which powers approximately 700,000 homes annually. Further developments, such as the East Anglia TWO project which gained consent in March 2022 and East Anglia Three for which construction began in June 2022, are set to enhance this capacity to power almost 3 million homes, contributing to the UK’s 2030 energy targets .
In addition to wind energy, Suffolk is home to the planned Sizewell C nuclear power plant, expected to provide low-carbon electricity to six million homes and create 10,000 skilled jobs . The county’s commitment to Green Energy is further evidenced by the recent completion of the Nexus business development in Lowestoft, designed to support companies in the renewable energy sector .
These initiatives are part of a broader £14 billion Green energy and technology growth plan endorsed by local leaders, aiming to establish Suffolk as an epicentre of Green technology convergence. By focusing our hackathon on Green tech, we aim to harness this momentum, encouraging innovation that aligns with regional strengths and national sustainability goals.
